In a mediated divorce, both parties work together to find a common agreement about how to divide assets and visitation rights (if the marriage includes children).  Instead of each party being represented by a lawyer who is legally required to fight hard for just one side, in mediation one neutral mediator helps both parties in the divorce find a equitable and simple division of their assets and varying visitation rights. 

A mediator is barred from providing specific legal advice, but he or she can help educate both parties about the legal aspects to a divorce so that they can better understand the proceedings and division of assets.  Mediators also help both parties by developing a common agenda of issues that need to be addressed in order to insure that nothing falls through the cracks.  Mediators can also provide a variety of options so that both parties can choose an arrangement that works for them and that they agree upon.

In Connecticut, a program of mediation services for persons filing for dissolution of marriage may be established in such judicial districts of the Superior Court as the Chief Court Administrator may designate. Mediation services shall address property, financial, child custody and visitation issues.
